best fantasy quotesAs readers, we all love language and story, and when I run across something particularly profound, or gut-wrenching, world-changing, or just plain unexpected and funny I always capture them for easy reference later. Among Others by Jo Walton

Among Others book coverI loved Among Others. Fantasy tends toward a very specific mold, and magical systems in particular always seem to be overt, in-your-face, as subtle as being hit by a speeding train. Not so in this book.

The protagonist herself is like a deep strong river, calm on the surface but with an incredibly strong undercurrent. She is a strong, brave, and deeply thoughtful young woman who struggles to understand the mysteries of the world. The magical systems are the same – woven deeply into the very fabric of the world this story inhabits they are sometimes hard to see. Are even harder to understand. A calm surface with seemingly innocuous actions such as burning a letter or tossing something into a pond, having deep and reaching consequences far beyond what any mortal might see.

This is what I loved most about this book. On the surface it seemed a calm thing, meandering through the life of a young girl and something of a casual pace. But underneath an epic battle between good and evil raged, magic that forever changed the fabric of the world in unknowable and unpredictable ways was wielded with great intent and (often) little understanding. And a young girl stood at the center of it all (sci-fi book in hand, most importantly!) struggling to understand and withstand those raging currents of maybe-light and maybe-dark forces, to make sense of it all, and maintain some level of sanity in the every-day world so vulnerable to those forces.

Definitely a thumbs up from this reader.
